My current solo hiking kit for Western Europe - 3 season

Notes

  • I would swap the entire "Shelter" section if going with my partner, usually for the Zpacks Duplex in .55 oz DCF (539g)
  • Umbrella - in the "Shelter" section as I use it as the vestibule for my tarp. Easily the most versatile bit of kit I own - the most breathable rain kit in the world, great sun protection, and in an emergency it is great for signalling to boot.
  • Trekking poles - Could also really be in the first-aid section as I view trekking poles as indispensable first-aid equipment. As most hiking injuries occur in the lower legs, having a solid, reliable, set of trekking poles can make all the difference in enabling you to descend safely when injured.
  • Sleeping system - If very cold and wet I'd pair the Delta-Race 200 bag with a Valley and Peak custom APEX 200 quilt (-1°C/30°F) (M/R) 700g. Together this system is good down to about -7°C and comes in at just a few grams over 1kg. I love this set up as it offers the best of both worlds. Basically a super snug down "liner bag" paired with a generous synthetic quilt over the top. In the depths of winter I use a different sleep system - Western Europe| Winter | Solo
