Mar's 2024 Pack

This 3-season backpacking setup is for overnight, weekend, and section hikes. Currently in the DMV area exploring the AT, NPs and waterways. I would not expect to resupply using this pack. The goal is to be lightweight and efficient. My biggest weight concerns in order of most importance are my sleeping bag, packed clothes and tent. There is room for many small improvements, such as lighter tent stakes or trekking poles, but I would rather improve my biggest concerns. I am a graduate student and have limited funding/time for this hobby. I have been refinding this pack since 2020. I feel comfortable, but I would like to lose weight in the big categories so that I can bring a few more luxury items, such as a CCF pad. Winter camping is my favorite so this pack will be updated for the extra warmth and comfort. The Kakwa is a brand new addition from my previous Gregory pack in the effort towards simplified hiking style.

Hiking Goal

I want to section hike the AT NOBO through Shenandoah National Park. I previously did a weekend of backcountry camping in the North District during Oct 2024 and had a lot of fun. I anticipate 5-7 days of hiking depending on the pace I decide to set. Water collection is simple as there are many streams and rivers along the trail. I would likely camp near AT shelters so I will have access to poles for hanging my food, otherwise I would need to bring a line to throw a bear bag. There are no stores/restaruents in the park so I would carry all my own food.

I use iterations of this pack for bikepacking and canoeing. Minor adjustments that are normally equivalent (i.e. trekking poles for tent poles or backpack for bike frame bags)
