This is a packing list for my Appalachian Trail thru-hike starting on February 1 and going North starting from Amicalola Falls, Georgia.

Packing Philosophy: I am an aspiring ultra-light hiker and work to reduce my base weight and pack size primarily to make walking a more enjoyable venture. However, I am not a masochist and have the aim of hiking to commune with nature and gain insights into myself and the world. This motivates some choices of personal items.

Hiking Conditions: I anticipate precipitation (rain & snow) with temperatures of ~20-50 deg F for the first 2 months. This motivates a number of "body items" (e.g. gaiters and thermal leggings) as well as the cold temperature sleeping bag and liner. They say you carry your fears - I hate sleeping cold.

Gear Acquisition/Cost: I have purchased this gear over the course of the past 10 years. The process involved changing things out for higher quality (i.e. lighter/smaller) which ultimately means more expensive. Where a link is not provided, the cost is a best estimate.

Gear Weight: When possible, the weight is taken from the official quote on the website. Otherwise, I used a 1960's style spring-based mail weight scale to get the weight. The precision of this is probably plus/minus 0.2 oz for each item so you ca do the error propagation.
