This is an “ultra-ultralight” backpacking trip with a base weight of less than 1 kg (2.2 lbs). With phone in my pocket as usual, weight on my back fully loaded will be 2.56 kg (5.65 lbs).
Expected conditions: foggy and cool. Occasional drizzle & mist. Expecting high of 64F and low of 51F. 10-15 mph wind. UV exposure index forecast is zero.
I’ll be staying at Coast Camp, site 1, which should have a fabulous view of the sunset over the Pacific. The requirement to camp in an established (i.e., compacted) site is a bug, not a feature, since I won’t have soft materials to insulate & cushion my minimalist pad. Campgrounds at Pt Reyes have pit toilets supplied with toilet paper, garbage bins, and a potable water spigot.
Tuesday, July 1, 2025: Starting at Palomarin parking lot and hiking 14.5 miles to Coast campground (site 1), stopping on my way at Wildcat campground to replenish my water. Wednesday, July 2: I’ll return by the same trail but will take a side trip when I reach Wildcat to visit Alamere Falls via a 2-mile round trip beach walk. Low tide is at 10:48 am, so my timing should be perfect.
Total trip length is 31 miles: 14.5 miles each way, with about a 2-mile detour to visit Alhamere Falls.

Quilt
Zpacks Summer Quilt 40F, comfort rated to 50F. A bit heavier than the Cumulus, but it’s the lightest I had available to me in California. A great quilt I’ve enjoyed on a lot of trips.

Pad
Gossamer Gear Thinlight, 1/8” thick, cut to 40”. I extended it 10” beyond torso length to fold under my rump & hips in the divot I plan to dig (or find). With a slight 0.5 r-value, I will probably be at/below my comfort/warmth thresholds for this pad.

Sleeping Bag (alternate)
Cumulus Magic 100. This is back in South Carolina so I don’t have it available for this trip. Comfort rated at 55F, but I’ve slept comfortably in it as low as 48F in the past.

Tarp
Ounce Designs 1-person Shelter w/ guyline. I don’t have my lighter poncho tarp (110g) with me and this is the lightest shelter I have with me in California.

Backpack
Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Daypack. 20L. I cut off tags, loops & excess straps. I “upgraded” to this from my attempts to make a sling bag “work”. (Spoiler alert: it doesn’t.)

Bag for quilt
DCF stuff sack (8L). Cinched tight, it should provide adequate moisture protection but will allow my quilt to “poof out” and fill the daypack.

Water storage
1L Dasani bottle with label & plastic thingy removed. Weighs 13g less than a Smartwater bottle and is just as robust. Longest water carry is 9 miles in cool weather between reliable sources. This should be adequate. It “just” fits horizontally inside the Sea to Summit daypack.
