This is a detailed list of the gear I will be bringing on my 2025 thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail to complete my first Triple Crown.

I won't be carrying all of these items for the duration of the hike, however. I will be sending home some clothing as the nightly temps increase.

A few notes:

  • The spoon is my holy grail of ultralight spoon, manufactured by a company that produces food utensils for correctional facilities. They can be found for $1 at most outfitters.

  • After the CDT I came to value performance over weight with my rain gear choices. There are lighter rain jackets but they're not waterproof. They'll wet out eventually, and let's be honest about breathability: it's largely a marketing gimmick. Your breathable rain jacket doesn't breathe, you're still going to get wet on the inside. I'd rather be wet on the inside but warm because the fabric is truly waterproof, than wet on the inside and now cold because the fabric has wet out. I prefer rain jackets made from silpoly which offer mechanical ventilation.

  • Never again will I use any other trowel other than the Vargo Dig Dig. Full stop. Save for perhaps the trowel manufactured by Suluk46, which I have no experience with, any other trowel is inferior. When you're in an emergency, crouched down in a compromising position, digging a hole and clenching the cheeks, you want a tool to make quick work of anything getting in your way.
