March 14 - 17, Temps low around 34° and high 55°. Wet and rainy. Fresh snow in the top 1,000 vertical feet on the South Rim. Microspikes were good for that first mile in and last mile out. No bugs. Mice were a problem. A rodent proof bag was necessary or at least a very well hung food bag.

Nailed the food. Was well fed and climbed out of the canyon with no food left. Gear was nearly perfect. Wouldn't change anything other than a bigger, more comfy pillow. The Showa gloves can't be tucked into the cuff of my rain jacket so I wish I brought my REI Gore-Tex ones with a glove liner. Happy to have sleep socks/a fresh change of clothes to change out of for the wet weather but two hiking socks weren't necessary since there was plenty of space between the wet weather for my shoes and socks to dry out. Shelter of choice was ideal. No bugs meant no netting necessary but it was very windy and rainy morning of day 2 so having the solid Solomid XL was great. I need to reapply seam sealant in two small areas near the peak. The alcohol stove was okay. I think I like Esbit better but it was nice to not have to deal with the residue of the Esbit fuel on my pot. Boil times seemed quicker than Esbit. Aquamira was terrific. Totally switching to that system from now on. No taste and easy system to manager in the backcountry. Loved the z-style trekking pole for scrambles where you need to tuck it away quick. It was easy to stash it on my fanny pack strap.
