I've hiked ~8,000 miles and tried a lot of rain jackets. There really aren't any good solutions to hiking exposed in the rain, but still we try. The most comfortable I've ever felt walking in the rain was under an umbrella on the CDT. So far, the best overall jacket so far is the Antigravity Gear UL 2 -- it's waterproof, has pitzips and a good cut so I don't overheat, it's durable, not too expensive and you can buy one off the shelf.
